While staying at our downtown Calgary apartments, why not see what the city has to offer? Festivals include the Calgary International Improv Festival in October, the Calgary International Children’s Festival in May, the Calgary International Film Festival in October, the Calgary Folk Music Festival in July and the Maple Festival Des Sucres De Calgary in the spring. The following are some information about each festival.

1) Calgary International Improv Festival.

This festival runs from Sept. 26 until Oct. 2 in 2011. This year’s featured performer is Colin Mochrie, one of the comedians from Who’s Line Is It Anyway? Other performers include Patti Stiles and Roman Danylo, from CTV Comedy Inc. Saturday, Oct. 1, also includes comedy by kids and for kids as well. All of the Improv festival events take place at the Epcor Centre.

2) Calgary International Children’s Festival.

The children’s festival is from May 22 to 26, 2012, and takes place at theatres throughout the city, such as the Epcor Centre and the Martha Cohen Theatre. Performances include 1001 Calgarian Nights, Shoes of Sand, the Monkey Bunch, Medicine Bear, a Puppet Workshop, the Man Who Planted Trees, Norman Foote, BAM and much more.

3) Calgary International Film Festival.

From Sept. 23 to Oct. 2, 2011, Calgary’s many downtown theatres will showcase international films. Some of the films are @neshi4mayor, Becoming Santa, Being Elmo, Angels Crest, Amy George, the Chocolate Farmer, Blackthorn, Flowers of Evil, I’m Yours, Heat Wave, Journey of a Dream, Kill List, King of Devil’s Island and Monster Brawl.

4) Calgary Folk Music Festival.

Every year in July, Calgary is home to the Calgary Folk Music Festival. The 2012 edition will be held on July 26 to July 29, 2012. Next year’s festival is not finalized, but 2011’s included Blue Rodeo, City and Colour, and k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang. The 2012 listing is sure to please as well!

5. Maple Festival des Sucres Calgary.

This festival occurs in spring every year. In 2011, it was held in March and included a family day that spotlighted Tournedo, the festival’s mascot. There was also a sugar market and of course, the traditional maple taffy on fresh snow.

1) Accessibility.

Downtown Calgary has an excellent transit system, with many buses plus the C Train as well. The C Train itself has over 35 stations, of which 11 are in the downtown area – making it very easy to get where you are going. Downtown Calgary also has many grocery stores available, from mom and pop convenience stores to well-known brand names. Downtown Calgary is also thick with shopping, from large malls to eclectic boutiques.

2) Attractions.

In downtown Calgary you are in the heart of the action. Calgary’s many events and attractions include the Calgary Stampede which occurs in July every year, the Calgary Flames, our local NHL hockey team, and the Calgary Stampeders, our CFL football superstars.

If you are a music lover don’t despair, the Saddledome plays host to many famous bands and events throughout the year, ensuring you always have something to do!

3) Restaurants.

From good old-fashioned down-home cooking to a romantic evening for you and your mate, you will find many different types of restaurants in downtown Calgary. There are restaurants that specialize in making food with local flavours, such as buffalo burgers or Alberta beef. Of course other ethnic cuisines such as sushi, Chinese, French, and Italian abound as well.

4) Nightlife.

Calgary’s downtown also features a lively nightlight. From savvy jazz clubs to rock and roll bars, you can always find somewhere to experience Calgary’s bustling nightlife.

5) Outdoor activities.

Yes, Calgary is a thriving city – but a thriving city with a taste for the outdoors. Not only is there an equestrian centre a stone’s throw from downtown, but there is Princess Island Park, a place to experience excellent cultural activities in the heart of the city.
